Chapter 6
âIâve let everyone down Roxy, you, me, but most of all Wendoverâ
Frantic was the only way to describe the atmosphere back at the truck as Timmy reached for his receiver and heard no signal.* Where is the signal? he kept asking himself. Then he remembered that he did not even turn on the transmitter. âOh Roxy Iâve lost him.â
Roxy leaned into Timmy trying in her way to make him feel better. Timmy loaded Roxy into the truck and started the engine. Where would he look? This was going to be worse than a needle in a haystack. Locating a bird on the wing flying from place to place and constantly moving would be a matter of luck. Timmy thought of his bird all alone in a wild world with that eagle breathing down his neck not to mention Redtails and coyotes and. . .
Wendover had never been out on his own before. Timmy decided to follow the âline of sightâ and drove in the direction he thought the falcon had flown. But to his frustration he came to a locked gate. There was a sign that read, âAbsolutely No Trespassing call Flying M ranches 209 555-2121.â He remembered that there was a small pond on to the north but he would have to back track and drive around, and that would probably take him until dark. Resigned to the situation, Timmy decided to call the number on the sign to see if he might gain permission to retrieve his hawk in the morning. Timmy went to the back of the truck, opened Roxyâs crate and hugged his dog then whispered to Roxy, âIâve let everyone down Roxy, you, me, but most of all. . .Wendover.â
Meanwhile, in all the excitement, Diego Maximilian Jones had âbugged out,â that is, he left the truck when Timmy was checking the receiver for a signal. He knew he had to do something âBigâ and this may be his last chance to get close enough to Ria. He thought she must be roosting* close by. He thought if he could only find Ria everything would be fine. But now he had the same problem that Timmy hadâwhere to look in such a big world. And If you think the world is a big place for a human, try being a Pack rat. Night time was closing in and he figured out that for the time being he better take care of his own fur. Great-horned owls were the lions of the night, and he had more than one close call with them. Bobcats, too, could be a problem, as could foxes and snakes, dogs and cats. D.J. shivered, then told himself to try and not think about the food chain* of the wild. It finally came as a complete surprise when he looked down to find he had been stepping on a grasshopper the whole time his mind was in worry mode.
âCrunch, crunch.â He always thought better on a full stomach. He found a hollow branch and thought, with darkness just minutes away, that it could be a fine hiding place.
